Maths

INTENT

The Maths curriculum at Archers Brook is highly inclusive and is skilfully designed to meet the needs and interests of all pupils. The maths curriculum is planned and sequenced in order for pupils to not only develop and extend skills and knowledge but to develop their confidence and self esteem. The curriculum is clearly planned in long and medium term and builds towards a clear end point.

Teaching of the mathematics curriculum develops pupils understanding of important concepts as well as their proficiency in techniques and recall of knowledge, equipping pupils to work independently. This helps pupils see how maths is relevant in all subjects and in everyday life enabling them to achieve their potential.

IMPLEMENTATION

Pupils are taught Maths as a core subject from Key Stage 2 to Year 11. Lessons are carefully planned to develop pupils’ skills and knowledge. KS2, Y7, Y8 & Y9 LTP and MTP are based on the White Rose scheme – developing and extending basic skills each year. Y10 &Y11 LTP and MTP also incorporate the White Rose scheme but  have the GCSE outcomes also embedded in, enabling pupils to extend and apply their skills and develop independence when problem solving.

KS2 to Y11 have the opportunity during the year to take part in activities which will help develop their financial awareness in the everyday situations and begin to equip them with the knowledge to help them make informed choices and decisions Post 16.

All pupils take an active participation in their learning with subject leaders communicating high expectations, enthusiasm and passion when delivering curriculum content. This inspires pupils to produce the best work they can and make progress over time.

IMPACT

  • Pupils at Archers Brook will have confidence when using basic skills to solve problems and to be able to transfer the skills to all areas of the curriculum and to everyday financial situations

  • Pupils become independent thinkers when completing problems – using different strategies taught and developed to achieve reasonable solutions.

  • Pupils are able to achieve qualifications which enable them to progress to Post 16 pathways and to be confident when dealing with finances.

KEY STAGE 2

KS2 has 6 1/2 hour sessions during the week.

The pupils access a varied curriculum, covering all aspects of maths which develop the skills and knowledge required for their futures. The Scheme is based upon The White Rose Scheme where the topics are built upon as they work through the school.

Also we focus on financial skills and knowledge which starts to introduce them to the different aspects they are likely to see in everyday life.

KEY STAGE 4

Each year group has 6 1/2 hour sessions during the week.

The pupils access a varied curriculum, covering all aspects of maths which develop the knowledge and skills required for the GCSE/Entry Level Certificate qualifications required for their next stages of education.

We follow the AQA GCSE specification (which has aspects of The White Rose scheme included) and at the end of the 2 years, 3 exams are sat - 1 non-calculator, 2 calculator papers.  The ELC is also completed during their final year. Pupils can sit both GCSE and the Entry Level Certificate.

The papers are 1 1/2 hours long. Pupils are graded between 1- 5 in the Foundation paper and 4 - 9 in the Higher paper.

Also we focus on financial skills and knowledge which starts to introduce them to the different aspects they are likely to see in everyday life.
